3.1. Antioxidant properties of MPEE
One hundred grams of mangosteen pericarp powder yielded
23.2 g of crude ethanol extract. The vacuum dried extract was a
yellowish paste.
The total phenolic content in the ethanol extracts was
64.3 ± 3.2 mg GA equivalent per g dry pericarp (GAE/g DW), less
than that of the green tea, a standard antioxidant, with a value of
72.5 ± 5.8 GAE/g DW. The total phenolics content in the green tea
was similar with previous study which reported the total phenolics
content of 62.1 mg GAE/g DW for green tea water extract (Vinokur
et al., 2006).
The antioxidant activities of MPEE were measured by the DPPH,
FRAP and ORAC assays and the results are summarized inTable 2.
The IC50value of DPPH was similar to green tea, while the FRAP
and ORAC values were less.
