Over the period of May 2010–July 2011, consecutive inpatients of the oncology ward of Singapore General Hospital, the only tertiary hospital in Singapore, were screened. They were identified by oncology and palliative care physicians and nurses. Broad inclusion criteria were used and they were recruited so long as they consented to the study. Patients with delirium were excluded by members of the referring teams and trained research assistants, with an informal assessment based on the potential patients’ orientation. The study was granted ethics approval from the Singhealth Combined Institutional Review Board (CRIB), responsible for overseeing research activities in the hospital.
