Case study
The leadership development program (LDP) was designed to help community
members to help themselves, through learning how to learn and in the process
developing problem-solving and other lifelong learning skills. We recognize that
development of leadership skills in individuals is necessary but not sufficient in itself
to create and sustain an effective learning community. Development of leadership
skills in individuals is necessary because it creates capacity within a community to
share learning with others. It is this cascade effect that builds and sustains a learning
community. As such the LDP serves well as a case study to illustrate the concept of the
sustainable learning community and put evidence-based flesh on its conceptual bones.
