As a person who enjoys good restaurants, I see an analogy between what restaurants have to do to provide a high-quality dining experience and what colleges have to do to provide a high-quality educational experience. Without meaning to slight other important factors, three key aspects of a good dining experience are an inviting menu, well-prepared food, and prompt and thoughtful service. If any one of these ingredients is missing, the quality of the dinning experience is significantly lowered. But the quality of the food is especially important: this is the fundamental reason for going to a restaurant in the first place. If food is not well prepared, the restaurant is going to have problems, no matter how exciting the menu or how friendly the waiters.
