Communication is crucial to any musician’s performance,
and improvisation allows the musician to focus
‘in the moment’ with few or no demands on perfection,
which ability is crucial for relaxed playing for audience.
With these consequences in mind, improvisation is
clearly more beneficial than just a creative diversion for
talented students; it is far-reaching and advantageous to
all ages and ability levels, and should be re-evaluated as
