Note the azimuth radiation patterns for selected bands shown in Fig 12-14 through Fig12-17. At 7.2MHz, where the antenna is about 1long, the pattern look very much like what you would expect to see from a /2 dipole. The sharp-eyed observer will note that compared to that of a /2 dipole, the lobes are sharper and the gain is a bit higher. As the electrical length moves above 1, the pattern gets significantly more complex. This can be a mixed blessing. On the plus side, you get more gain and coverage into different regions on the higher bands. On the other side, if you wish to communicate (or listen) to specific locations, you may wish you had the dipole’s simple pattern on every band.
