Packhouses are a mix of high technology, precision graders and often disjointed information systems. Current information systems can at best deliver traceability to the level of a run. These data systems and designs predate any significant requirement for traceability. Design parameters are targeted at throughput, cost and operational convenience. All current traceability systems have been retrofitted, or applied operationally after packhouse construction and initial system implementation. To date, traceability has meant breaking processing into segments of relative homogeneity or product ownership called runs, and recording all production information for the period against the run.
