Large datasets also lend themselves to highly computationally intensive methods. While neural
networks have been used in forecasting for more than a decade now, there are many outstanding issues associated with their use and implementation, including when they are likely to outperform other methods. Other methods involving heavy computation (e.g., bagging and boosting) are even less understood in the forecasting context. With the availability of very large datasets and high powered computers, we expect this to be an important area of research in the coming years
