While Sylvia merely wants to escape the drudgery of what seems like being in school, Sugar seems to understand what Miss Moore's intention is in taking them to F.A.O. Schwartz. At one point she says, "I think that this is not much a democracy if you ask me. Equal chance to pursue happiness means an equal crack at the dough, don't it?" (Bambara 462). Of course, in U.S. society, democracy and the American Dream suggests such egalitarianism, but Sugar and Miss Moore know this is not the case due to racism, prejudice and social stratification based on wealth. Bambara exposes this myth and the unfair treatment of minorities in American culture.
