In conclusion, breastfeeding has numerous factors such as hormones, cytokines and other bioactive compounds
that protect against disease in infancy and promote optimum development. Breastfeeding is the biological norm. The
current level of knowledge about breastmilk and the mechanisms whereby breastfeeding impacts on infant health and
development provides evidence that breastfeeding should be supported and promoted to the public. The aim must be to
increase the duration of exclusive breastfeeding for all infants to at least six months and then continuation of
breastfeeding for two years and beyond, for as long as is desired by mother and child.
