PROCEDURE
The employee will explain as follows: (Figures 1 through 4)
1. Describe four types of engine starter motors.
2. What type is the fire water pump starter motor?
3. What type is the crane starter motor?
Answer:
1.1 Vane -Regulated pneumatic pressure enters the starter through the inlet port and contacts vanes on a rotor, causing the starter to spin. The pneumatic pressure is piped away from the unit through an exhaust port.
1.2 Hydraulic -High pressure oil enters the starter through the inlet port and comes in contact with a series of pistons that shift forward, causing the starter to spin. The oil is returned to the system reservoir through an outlet port on the starter.
1.3 Turbine -Regulated pneumatic pressure enters the starter through the inlet port and flows through a turbine nozzle, which directs the pneumatic pressure to a turbine wheel. The pneumatic pressure flows across the turbine wheel, causing the starter to spin. The pneumatic pressure is piped away from the unit through an exhaust port. Automatic Trip Valves (ATV) shuts off the flow of pneumatic pressure when the starter cranking speed begins to exceed safe limits.
1.4 Electric -When DC electrical power is applied to the starter terminals, an electromagnetic field develops between the armature and commutator, causing the starter to spin.
