Increased driver-training requirements, national licensing, drug screening, and other factors have served to reduce the pool of qualified drivers. The changing nature of the driver’s job at many carriers may help to explain some of the changes in the communication methods used to reach qualified drivers. As the driver comes to be regarded more as a professional service provider and less as a “truck driver,” this change in perceived status gets reflected in the compensation incentives offered, education required, and professionalism expected.
