L. plantarum MRO3.12 isolated from digestive tract of wild banana shrimp was well-adapted to establish in shrimp gut. Therefore it is an effective probiotic with a great potential to control and prevent V. harveyi infection both in vitro and in vivo due to its inhibitory and immunostimulant effects. The result of this study showed that alteration of microbial flora in shrimp digestive tract can be achieved by administration of L. plantarum through feeding.
L. plantarum MRO3.12 significantly increased shrimp survival, meanwhile also improved shrimp resistance against V. harveyiinfection hence higher survival from the infection than the control
(without probiotic feeding). Moreover the FCR was lower in the treated shrimp suggesting that addition of L. plantarumMRO3.12 in feeding can significantly improve product yield. However, probiotic mode of action in term of immunological stimulation and overall benefit of L. plantarum MRO3.12 should be further studied in the condition directly relevant to the shrimp farming environment
