Don’t Leave Empty Bottles on the Table
It’s bad luck to put a bottle back on the table once it’s empty because it means that you’re going to be poor. Apparently, the superstition was brought to Russia by Cossacks in the 19th century who had been in France. The rumor goes that Cossacks had noticed that the way the French calculated their table bill was to count the number of empty bottles remaining on the table. The Cossacks became privy to this and started hiding the finished bottles under the table. They brought the habit back to Russia as a token custom in for drinking and saving money.
