Procter and Gamble in Ohio, Phillip Morris in New York State and most recently MGI
(Metro) of Germany have opened Future Stores as a means of demonstrating the type of
facilities that might be expected in an Auto ID-enhanced retail outlet. Applications range
from smart – anti theft – shelves, to wireless and automated ordering systems, to
intelligent trolleys which scan items as they are collected and update an electronic
shopping list accordingly. Personalized advertising systems have also been tried.
