3. Discussion
Liver diseases, such as alcoholism and cirrhosis, induce intestinal
bacteria translocation. The translocated bacteria in this study were basically isolated gut microbiota, therefore, the study uncovered
no evidence that S. suis from contaminated food can
transfer from the gut to blood. Based on the epidemiology of the
S. suis infections in Thailand [6], the infection route of S. suis is
suspected to occur via through intestinal translocation after
humans ingest raw pork meat and/or blood. Meanwhile, approximately
30% of the Thai patients with an S. suis infection had chronic
alcohol problems [6], so this study evaluated whether alcoholic
liver disease can induce S. suis infection.
