The correlation between the percentage of faults and the protein content in the
mixtures is high.
Though with only three observations there is a tendency towards a production of relatively poorer mixtures when the statutory protein level is high.
The high demand for protein in ” CowC ” means that it has to contain a lot of soya
and/or fishmeal.
The protein price, which is relatively high, may tempt the factories tominimize the protein feed supplement when formulating the mixtures
(Church, 1991b,Church, 1991~).
This is not in accordance with Alderman (1985) who is referring to an unpublished
survey done in 1979 by the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food concluding: “As
the differences between mean declared oil, crude protein and crude fibre contents of the compound feed samples and those obtained by analysis were all in favour of the
customer, these data did not support the view that compounders systematically take
advantage of statutory tolerance limits in formulating their feeds”.
Why then, is it more difficult to make an accurate ” CowC” mixture, than to make the other ones? And is it really so?.
There are some cases where the analysed protein level is higher than the upper
guaranteed limit.
These are, however, rather few.
For “CowA” the relation between samples with too much and samples with too little protein was 19/159 = 0.12, for
“CowB” 3/10 = 0.30 and for “CowC” it was l/112 = 0.009.
Some possible explanations are already given, focusing on the composing procedure
as probably a greater contributing factor in commercial mixtures than that “weighing
errors and raw material variation interact to create significant variation in compound
feeds” (Fawcett et al., 1992).
These factors can however, easily be compensated, if the goal is to make mixtures with a protein content, in the long run, at the declaration’s average value.
The guaranteed range for protein level in concentrated feed like “CowC”, set by the
authorities, might also be too narrow to cope with for the feed mixing industry.
The actual problems should, however, be further examined, also for other branches using mixing technology. Contrary to findings by Fawcett and Webster (1991) there is found no significant correlation between number of faults, or percentage of faults, versus number of samples for either of the mixtures.
By introducing the factors M,, and M,, which relate the percentages of faults in a
mixture to the percentage of samples from the production, the mixtures can be compared independently of the size of the production.
M, vs. year is drawn in Fig. 1 for ” CowA ” , ” CowB ” and ” CowC" , showing the protein richest mixture with a mean level (M, = 1.69) to be significantly higher (P < 0.01) than “CowA” (M, = 0.51) and “CowB” (MY = 0.46), between which there is no difference (P = 0.70).
There is, however, no significant correlation (P > 0.05) between M, and year for
either of the mixtures, indicating that the factories have not developed more accurate
mixtures during the period.
This is rather remarkable because of great innovations and
investments at all levels in the feed mixing industry these years.
No difference (P > 0.05) is found between the parameter M for the different mixtures, when categorized by factory CM,,).
In Fig. 2, M,,, for the ruminant mixtures are plotted versus the distance between the
factories, showing a high correlation (R2 = 0.923, P = 0.003) between the parameters.
Fig. 1. Relationship between time (in year) and M,, for three different mixtures for ruminants. M, is taken
from Tables l-3.
There is also a high correlation between these parameters for “CowC” (P = 0.004) and “CowB” (P = 0.006).
For “CowA”, P is 0.144.
If the value for Fl, however, is omitted as an outlier, P becomes 0.002.
If M,, is drawn versus factory number, P becomes 0.013.
These findings are interesting, because they are showing statistically significant
differences between the factories, as to regions in the making of accurate mixtures. To compose a feed mixture these three categories of data should be used:
1. Actual content of the components that are to be mixed.
2. Empirical data from domestic and foreign commonly used feeds.
3. Data from international tables and publications,
