The disposition to use information seeking
skills on a personal level is made plain in the fourth standard, Pursue personal and aesthetic
growth, particularly in indicator 4.2.2, which states that students should “demonstrate
motivation by seeking information to answer personal questions and interests, trying a variety
of formats and genres, and displaying a willingness to go beyond academic requirements” (p.
7). This indicator describes intrinsic motivation for information seeking and implies the
importance of this trait to the student’s life outside of school both now and in the future. Thus,
fostering intrinsic motivation for information seeking is a part of our mission as a profession
and should be an integral part of our practice as library media specialists.
