To our knowledge, the present study is the first to demonstrate that state body image is
immediately affected by a single physical exercise session. Regarding the perceptual
component of state body image, participants estimated their ‘felt’ body dimensions to be
slightly slimmer post-exercise compared to pre-exercise. Similarly, for the attitudinal
component of body image, discontent with one’s own body decreased from pre- to postexercise.
In addition, ratings of positive mood significantly increased from pre- to postexercise.
Finally, it was shown that the higher the degree of pre-experimental drive for
thinness, body dissatisfaction as well as weight and shape concerns, the more the
participants’ estimations of their body size were influenced by the physical exercise session.
