Modal split change index
Modal split data were considered from the available transportation
studies (IBI, 2007; MOMRA, 1980; Municipality of Jeddah,
2006). Table 8, Figs. 11 and 12 show changes in the modal split
from 1970 to 1980, from 1980 to 2002, and from 2002 to 2007
respectively. Increasingly over time, cars dominated the share of
daily trips (50% in 1970 to 93% in 2007), showing a positive high
modal split change rate. Conversely, public transportation and
other modes of transportation, have decreased, respectively. This,
then, indicates a relationship between travel mode and spatial
expansion: as the urban area dramatically expands, the city’s compactness
and travel behavior change.
