Instruments
The SIBS consists of 26 questions scored on a five-point
ordinal scale. It consists of four loosely specific domains: (1)
External/ritual (‘a person can be fulfilled without pursuing anactive spiritual life’, ‘spiritual activities have not helped me
become closer to other people’, ‘some experiences can be
understood only through one’s spiritual beliefs’, ‘a spiritual
force influences the events in my life’, ‘prayers do not really
change what happens’, ‘participating in spiritual activities
helps me forgive other people’, ‘I believe there is a power
greater than myself’, ‘my spiritual life fulfills me in ways that
material possessions do not’, I have a personal relationship
with a power greater than myself’, spiritual activities help me
draw closer to a power greater than myself’, ‘I solve my
problems without using spiritual resources’, ‘during the last
week, I prayed 0 times–10 or more times’, ‘last month I
participated in spiritual activities with at least one other
person 0 times–more than 15 times’), (2) Internal/fluid (‘in
the future, science will be able to explain everything’, ‘I can
find meaning in times of hardship’, ‘spiritual activities have
not helped me become closer to other people’, ‘some
experiences can be understood only through one’s spiritual
beliefs’, ‘my life has a purpose’, ‘my spiritual beliefs continue
to evolve’, ‘I probably will not re-examine my spiritual
beliefs’, ‘my spiritual life fulfills me in ways that material
possessions do not’, ‘spiritual activities have not helped me
develop my identity’, meditation does not help me feel more
in touch with my inner spirit’, ‘spiritual activities help me
draw closer to a power greater than myself’), (3) Existential/
meditative (‘I can find meaning in times of hardship’, ‘my life
has a purpose’, prayers do not really change what happens’,
‘meditation does not help me feel more in touch with my
inner spirit’, ‘during the last week, I prayed 0 times–10 or
more times’, ‘during the last week, I meditated 0 times–10 or
more times’, ‘last month, I participated in spiritual activities
with at least one other person 0 times–more than 15 times’)
and (4) Humility/personal application (‘when I wrong someone,
I make an effort to apologise’, ‘when I am ashamed of
something I have done, I tell someone about it’, ‘I solve my
problems without using spiritual resources’, ‘I examine my
actions to see if they reflect my values’).
Statistical analysis
The analysis consisted of descriptive analyses of the demographic
and medical of the sample and bivariate correlations,
t-tests or analyses of variance (ANOVA) to examine the
univariate associations between the variables. Regression
analyses (enter method) were then performed to examine the
association between the demographic variables (age, gender,
education, family status) medical variables (diagnosis, metastasis,
performance status, anti-cancer treatment and opioids)
and SIBS scale. Regression model assumptions were evaluated
using residuals-based diagnostic procedures. The significance
level was set at p < 0Æ05. Statistical analysis was
performed by SPSS version 10Æ0.
