Many of the instructional strategies advocated and utilized by cognitivists
are also emphasized by behaviorists, yet usually for diff erent reasons.
An obvious commonality is the use of feedback. A behaviorist uses
feedback (reinforcement) to modify behavior in the desired direction,
while cognitivists make use of feedback (knowledge of results) to guide
and support accurate mental connections (Th ompson, Simonson, &
Hargrave, 1992).
