At the moment, genome sequencing projects of 62 fungal
species including six basidiomycetes and 27 ascomycetes
have been completed and mostly published.
Several basidiomycete WGS are currently at the gene
annotation stage (GOLD Genomes-on-line database,
http://genomesonline.org/gold.cgi, October 15, 2009).
The representatives of divergent basidiomycetous subphyla
and order have been among the most significant
fungi selected for WGS projects, including one of the model
organisms for fungal genetics, the saprobe Coprinopsis
cinerea (Coprinus cinereus) (http://www.broadinstitute.org/
annotation/genome/coprinus_cinereus/Info.html), and the
crop plant pathogens Ustilago maydis [42] and Puccinia
graminis (http://www.broad.mit.edu/annotation/genome/
puccinia_graminis/), the coniferous tree pathogen Heterobasidion
annosum (http://www.jgi.doe.gov/genomeprojects/)
as well as the human pathogen Cryptococcus
neoformans and dandruff-associated Malassezia spp.
