In long-term groups, however, or as general practice, routinely taking breaks when experiencing discomfort sends a negative message that conflict is to be avoided rather than worked through. And, as we all know, if we call for breaks whenever personal conflicts arise, some groups will spend a great deal of time in hallways. Discomfort at some level is inherent in conflict resolution. Careful attention to ground rules and group process should allow most groups to work through issues without high levels of stress. If the decision is for the group to become involved, start them on the process by using some previously agreed-upon method that allows each person involved to describe in as factual terms as possible his or her version of the issues involved in the dispute.
