8. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Training shall be managed and conducted as required by the Group Minimum Standard, OI-L2-112 Employee Training, Competency, and Certification. SGS employees shall be provided with effective information and training on hazardous chemicals in their work area: at the time of their initial assignment through new employee safety training; whenever a new physical or health hazard the employee has not previously been trained on is introduced into their work area; and when a change in the work assignment introduces new hazards.
Employee information shall include:
• Informing personnel of the location and availability of the written hazard communication programme, including the required list(s) of hazardous chemicals and SDSs.
• Any operations in their work area where hazardous chemicals are present. This is accomplished during training or upon initial assignment to the area where the chemicals are used.
Employee training shall include:
• Methods and observations that must be used to detect the presence or release of a hazardous chemical in the work area (such as monitoring conducted by the employer, monitoring devices (i.e. detector badges, sensors, portable detectors), visual appearance or odour of hazardous chemicals when being released, etc.).
• The physical and health hazards of the chemicals in the work area.
• The measures employees must take to protect themselves from these hazards, including specific procedures the employer has implemented to protect employees from exposure to hazardous chemicals (such as appropriate work practices, emergency procedures, and personal protective equipment to be used).
• The details of the hazard communication programme developed by the employer, including an explanation of the labelling system and the safety data sheet as well as how employees can obtain and use the appropriate hazard information
