Black infants tend to have lower
levels of bilirubin than whites with an
average peak for both on the third
day of life. Asian and Native
American infants tend to have higher
levels, which peak on the fourth to
fifth day with a longer duration
(Hayes, 2000). Persistent early high
levels of bilirubin should prompt
investigation for G6PD deficiency
found in individuals from the
Mediterranean and Middle East,
Arabian peninsula, Southeast Asia,and Africa.
