2.2. Accidents in the sector
In Portugal there are few specific data on working accidents at
the catering sector. The available data always refer to the sector
called "accommodation and food." However, using data published
by the Ministry of Labor and Social Solidarity, for the year 2008, we
can see that there were 236086 people working in this sector and
for the same year, there were 11893 accidents, one fatal. Fig. 1
shows that the body parts most affected were the upper and
lower extremities, with 44% and 23% of total accidents, respectively
(GEP, 2010).
