Because nursing employs a holistic view of persons and their life beyond medical

conditions and aims to provide holistic care, nurses can see people and judge when end-of-life care is
needed from the vantage point of broader scope of entire life of the person. Furthermore, nurses serve not
only patients in hospitals but also residents in long-term care facilities, people living in communities, and
people who are relatively healthy and independent as well as those who are sick and dependent. Therefore,
nurses are well situated to identify people who need end-of-life care and provide care when it is
needed.
We propose the definition of end-of-life care as ‘‘to assist persons who are facing imminent or
distant death to have best quality of life possible till the end of their life regardless of their medical
diagnosis, health conditions, or ages
