A summary of production costs in selected exporting countries is given below. It should be noted
that costs in all countries are increasing over time, while coffee prices go both up and down. The dramatic
decline in world coffee prices observed between 2011 and 2013 has caused many producers to sell their
product at a price which is not remunerative, falling below the costs of production in many countries.
Whenever prices paid to producers are lower than their production costs, there is likely to be a
consequential fall in production and quality as a result of reduced farm maintenance.
