Betelgeuse: The Shoulder of the Mighty One
Betelgeuse is the tenth brightest star in our nighttime sky and an easy one to spot with the naked eye. It is a red supergiant M-type star about 13,000 times brighter than our Sun, up to 30 times more massive, and more than a thousand times larger. If you placed Betelgeuse in the same position as the Sun in our solar system, its atmosphere would extend past the orbit of Jupiter.
The name comes from the Arabic term "armpit (or shoulder) of the Mighty One", and is near the right shoulder of Orion.
