In the mean time, China tries to see if the two sides could work out
their differences for the sake of the reunification of the country
• Some progress was made when both sides agreed on what is called
the “1992 consensus” , basically meaning recognition of one China ,
but different interpretations
• China also proposed to use the “one country, two systems” as the
formula to bring in Taiwan in an unified China but to no avail
• What worries China most is that while there may be cross-strait
talks mainly on non-sensitive issues, Taiwan has refused to talk
about reunification; more importantly, there is rise of the yearn for
independence
