But Prof. Ashton, a water quality specialist at the CSIR in Pretoria, cautioned that towing an iceberg to South Africa would not be plain sailing.
“Once you have chopped off a chunk of iceberg, it takes a devil of a lot of power to get it moving towards Africa.” And once it started moving, the next problem was getting it stop – before it bumped into Table Mountain.
“You also have to consider that it could take several months to tow it to Africa, and it would be melting all the while. But yes, the idea is still feasible.’’
