n order to drive legally in the UK you must hold a valid driving licence. The youngest age at which an individual can take their driving test is 17 in the UK. It should be noted that an individual can apply for a provisional licence three months before they turn 17 years of age, but that they cannot take their theory test until they reach the age of 17.
There are other vehicles which can be used on the road in accordance with the Highway Code. Whilst nearly all of them specify that the driver must be a minimum of 17 years old, one of the exceptions is a moped with an engine size of 50 cc and a top speed of no more than 50km/hour. These cannot be driven on the motorway, but they can be driven on the public highway and therefore offer a chance for younger people to use a vehicle on the road before the age of 17.
