With The Walking Dead upping the intrigue since the mid-season premier, the internet has been a storm of swirling rumors that we soon might meet the baddest villain of the comic series, a man by the name of Negan.
For those unfamiliar, Negan was introduced to The Walking Dead comics in the 100th issue of series as the leader of a group known as the Saviors. The Saviors used fear and violence to control many communities such as Alexandria, and have had a huge influence over the course of the comic series since their introduction. Negan is well known for his weapon of choice - a wire-covered baseball bat, which he named Lucille, and the sight of Glenn Rhee picking up a baseball bat in the mid-season premier sent many into immediately speculation that Negan is coming soon. And guess what? Andrew Lincoln agrees!
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter Andrew Lincoln, the man behind Rick Grimes, has come out with what he expects to see now that the gang has made it to Alexandria, saying:
There are astonishingly brilliant and thrilling characters that I am convinced we would be idiots not to meet in our journey; I would be very surprised if we don't see Negan on the horizon in the not-too-distant future.
What struck me, that I've always been excited about, is we're coming into the sixth season of this show ... and it's the medieval part of The Walking Dead comic, where you realize that there are these isolated communities but don't really know other ones exist. But they're all building and forming themselves with their own image. And then there's a clash of those communities. That, to me, is really interesting and when it gets really exciting with all the action. It turns into this insane, near-apocalyptic landscape that we've never seen before. That is almost a reimagining and a restart for society and humanity. And that is such a rich thing to tell.
Tell us what you know, Andrew Lincoln!
The hints for Negan have been dropping all season starting with the first trailer for Season 5 including Glenn being swung at with a baseball bat while imprisoned at Terminus. The Season 5B poster then drew more Negan speculation when it included two smoke stacks that looked very similar to those of 'the Sanctuary,' the home base of the Saviours in comic series, and finally the mid-season premier capped it off with usage of razorwire, Glenn picking up a baseball bat as well as Noah's dead mom looking like she had had her head bashed in with a bat, rather than shot or bitten.
While it may seem a little early for Negan at the moment, it seems like all the hints are suggesting that he'll definitely be making tracks towards Alexandria by the end of Season 5, perhaps for an explosive start to the sixth season - what do you think?
