Turbinaria ornata is a very unique brown alga. Branched holdfasts support stiff thalli which stand ERECT (up to 13 centimeters tall) with irregularly branching stalked leaves which resemble small spiky cups. These 13 to 20 millimeter-long triangular or cone-shaped expansions of the cylindrical stalks are distinctly toothed around the edges (around the "rim" of the "cup"). A partial to complete inner ring of smaller teeth may be present on some specimen. The overall appearance of a single plant (one stem with many "cups") is anywhere from pinecone- to column-shaped but sometimes (especially under bloom conditions), many plants will grow very close together, forming instead a flat, dense mat over intertidal rocks. Plants are olive-brown to golden in color often with the concave face of the blades being lighter in color.
Turbinaria ornata is a common intertidal species but can also grow in up to 30 meters of water in variable habitats. Being such a thick, stiff seaweed, it is able to withstand more extreme environmental conditions (desiccation, high wave action) as well as herbivory. Nonetheless, upper portions of the plant are often torn off during the winter, leaving the holdfast to grow new blades.
