Every generation has its own fashion trends and ways of expressing itself. Since before World War II, Japan has taken aspects of Western culture and imported it into their own, twisting it to make it uniquely Japanese. Individualism has impacted Japan, and resulted in teen subcultures. This rejection of traditional forms of dress and behavior by teens is common in most cultures; the current generation of Japanese youth is no different, simply more extreme. However, by looking closely at a few subcultures it can be argued that though the Japanese youth dress differently, traditional elements such as group structure and group loyalty have not been entirely eradicated by their attempts at individuality. This complex structure of individualism in the midst of extreme group conformity has made many scholars focus on the reasoning behind why the subculture phenomenon is so popular in Japan. After a brief introduction of the most common of the subcultures, I will explore the mind behind the makeup.
