The elderly already constitute a significant demographic group of the population in NZ and the size of this group
is predicted to increase by 100% over the next 10 years. No specific resources dedicated to providing trauma care
to the elderly exist in NZ, and rehabilitation after injury is managed through geriatric care or health services for the
elderly. The system of where patients go to rehabilitate over the age of sixty depends on the classification of the level
or care required and can be at public hospital geriatric units or in privately based community rest homes or hospitals.
Thegovernment funded accident insurance scheme (ACC) contributes significantly to the provision of the care these
patients receive.
