Abstract- This review paper focuses on the challenges/impacts of tannery effluent and evaluates the alternative treatment
options used to treat/recycle the waste water. Tannery effluent is highly toxic and carcinogenic to human beings, animals,
plants and the general environment (soil and water sediment). The major pollutants are Chromium, Sulphates, Sulphides,
Chlorine, Nitrogen, Organic and Inorganic compounds. A biological approach is proposed to treat the effluent/wastewater
from the tannery industries. A consortia of bacteria is found in the literature to treat the effluent biologically for a safer
environment.
