In general, it will be important to diversify the methodologies in use in Facebook research,
which, at present, rely very heavily on subjective accounts. Specifically, it is worth exploring options for validating self-report data while also examining the impact of the tension this creates between the nonymous identity (which implies nonconfidentiality) and providing research data that accurately reflects participants’ thoughts and behavior. Tracking software that captures data on website usage and behavior is already available, and while this may provide a useful addition to Facebook research, the ethical issues relating to privacy, confidentiality, and data use would need to be considered carefully.
