Postoperative care
Continue to maintain the patient’s airway.
Elevate the head of the bed to 30 degrees or more if possible.
Monitor the patient closely for signs of pain and provide adequate
pain relief; administer analgesia and sedation accordingly.
Assess and document the size and reactivity of the patient’s pupils.
Level and zero the EVD, if necessary.
Minimize noise and light.
Cluster patient care.
Maintain cervical spine precautions.
Observe the patient’s vital signs for subtle and significant changes.
Monitor for signs of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
Communicate the patient’s status to his or her family members
when possible.
