Kinetics parameters are shown in Fig. 4 (using the result of ST to SSA as an example). kmax reflects the substrate utilization rate without antimicrobials. As Table 1 showed after disrupting the granules, SMA increased from around 0.950 gCOD(gVSSd)1 to 1.45 gCOD(gVSSd)1 using acetate. When using ethanol, SMA increased from around 0.900 gCOD(gVSSd)1 to 1.15 gCOD (gVSSd)1. Meanwhile SSA increased from around 0.350 gCOD (gVSSd)1 to 0.460 gCOD(gVSSd)1 using ethanol. These results indicate that disintegration did not damage the structure of the organic-consuming methanogens, and that the increase in the organic-consuming microorganisms suspended freely in the medium can contribute to improved microbial activity (see Fig. 5).
