3.2 The competency package
The competency package (top in Figure 2) addresses personal knowledge. Competencies
represent the individual knowledge workers’ competencies. The competency
package is directly related to the learning space from the 3 spaces. We will follow the
understanding of competencies in [6]. Here a competency is perceived as no nobservable,
theoretical construct denoting a personal characteristic of a human person
(e.g. knowledge or ability), which is applicable to differing contexts. A person shows
evidence of possessing competencies in that she masters certain so-called performances
(i.e. exercises and problems). The performances’ outcomes are observable and
measurable.
The links between the competency package and the other two packages are as follows:
The modelling element User within the competency package is connected to
the elements Competency (i.e. the competencies a user possesses) and Performance
(i.e. the work-related activities a user has executed). A User is equivalent to
an Actor in the process package (see above). The modelling element Concept
from the domain package (see below) is used for labelling the elements Competency
and Performance.
