In order to prevent seclusion, several interventions have been developed in Dutch mental healthcare
institutions. The interventions were inspired by the quality criteria, based on care ethics. One of the interventions is ‘‘The first five minutes at admission.’’ It focuses on the first encounter of the patient,
making him feel welcome and building rapport and trust. The intervention is described in a detailed protocol
containing a checklist. Nurses report positive experiences with this intervention. Yet, applying it does not
always result in a successful prevention of seclusion.
