Stress is not a diagnosis but is the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demands placed on them. If the pressure is excessive and goes on for too long, it can lead to other problems such as burnout, depression and anxiety. Furthermore, individuals experiencing excessive levels of stress may resort to other behaviours, such as smoking and unhealthy eating, which may increase the risk factors for coronary heart disease. Stress can be caused by factors at work or at home, with the latter being the more frequent cause. How people cope with pressure will be affected by a variety of factors including the amount of support from friends, family and work, as well as one’s personal coping mechanisms.
