led by Fermín Vázquez, has designed the Spanish Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015.
The Barcelona-based practice beat off 31 other entries to win the competition set up by Acción Cultural Española, the public body responsible for Spain’s involvement in Milan 2015.
Almost fifty specialists, including architects, engineers, interior designers, agronomists and consultants helped put together the design for the Spanish pavilion at Expo 2015.
The Expo 2015 exhibition will focus on three main strands: tradition and innovation in the production and distribution of basic foodstuffs; maintaining a healthy diet and traditional Spanish habits; sustainable agricultural production as a means of preserving the landscape, the heritage and the development of alternative tourism models.
The Pavilion, which extends over 2104 m², is entitled ‘El lenguaje del sabor’ (The language of taste). It will contain discrete and complementary spaces representing Spanish tradition and innovation. This duality will create a permeable, inclusive and flexible space; there will also be a courtyard with orange trees, symbolic of the Spanish identity.
The “shell” of the pavilion will be made from open wooden structures such as porticoes, and the interiors will be made of traditional materials such as cork, esparto grass or alpha and wood reclaimed from casks, with polished stainless steel finishings – a shining reference to the fluidity of Spanish oil and wine; symbolic Spanish foods the world over, adhering to the Expo theme: “Feed the Planet. Energy for Life.”
