CSR is a very comprehensive term and it is argued that the main focus of CSR should
be on sustainable business practices. Therefore, the role of corporates in terms of CSR
in the area of social sphere should not be looked into, in terms of funds spent on these
activities, but at the same time, it is difficult to engage in CSR without spending money.
The annual reports of companies explain in detail the kind of CSR activities that they are
engaged in, but do not specifically mention the funds spent on such activities. The most
common head under which these expenditures are indicated is donations. The question
is that even if the Indian companies have taken a very narrow view of CSR and limited it
to charity, what is the percentage and trend of such spending by companies in the period
when there was no legal compulsion to spend.
