According to Orem the art of caring is achieved not only by doing something for a person, but by supporting, teaching and encouraging that person to do it for themselves. Nursing is also practiced by supporting and/or teaching a capable person within the patient’s family or friendship circle in ways they can assist the patient, thus promoting health and well-being. Orem views people as capable and skilled with the ability to re-evaluate their situation and act in accordance with their own judgment. The concept of health is described as both functional and structural integrity and that when combined with the experience of fulfilment, create the conditions for physical, psychological and social well-being. Health constantly changes throughout life and is dependent on one’s capacity to self-care, and it is through this and caring for loved ones that ideal conditions are created for maintaining health and preventing illness
