In general, the influence of transportation systems on global climate change has been well documented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group III (Kahn Ribeiro et al. , 2007 ), and the impacts of climate change on the transportation sector as a whole have likewise been summarized by the IPCC Working Group II (IPCC, 2007a ). Bradley et al. ( 2007 ) p. 27 report that “transport accounts for about 14 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, of which road transport accounts for the largest share, at 72 percent of sector and 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions”. Some of the relevant findings are summarized below.
