Iron-Based Superalloys Iron-based superalloys are used primarily for elevatedtemperature
applications, as in turbines. Properties of typical iron-based superalloys
are listed in Appendix C-9. Some authorities consider only the austenitic materials to
be true superalloys. In general, they are used at temperatures above 1000°F (538°C),
and the martensitic materials are used at lower temperatures. Significant properties
of superalloys include at high temperatures strength and resistance to creep, oxidation,
corrosion, and wear. Typical uses are for parts (including bolts) of gas turbines,
jet engines, heat exchangers, and furnaces.
