Pomegranate juice may have antiatherosclerotic properties
in mice and humans.1 It contains antioxidants such as soluble
polyphenols, tannins, and anthocyanins2 and may decrease
carotid artery intima-media thickness after 1 year in
humans.3 However, the effects of pomegranate juice on
ischemic coronary heart disease (CHD) are unknown. We
evaluated the effects of daily consumption of pomegranate
juice or a placebo for 3 months on myocardial perfusion in
patients who had CHD and inducible ischemia as measured
by single-photon emission computed tomography in a randomized
double-blind study.
